Yale Flips the Script, Opposes Palestinian UN Bid

From “Yale Flips the Script, Opposes Palestinian UN Bid” (October 11, 2011)

What a difference three years can make. In September 2008, the Yale Political Union (YPU) voted by a 44-25 margin to end the US-Israel special relationship, in a move that Yale Hillel’s current Israel chair, Josh Kalla, terms a low point for Israel’s supporters at the school. Now, exactly three years later, the situation has changed. On Sept. 22, YPU voted to support a resolution that said, “America should oppose unilateral Palestinian statehood.”

The final vote in favor of opposing the UN move was 75-44.

Even more impressive than the final tally, observers said, was the civil tone that characterized the debate.

…Shadowitz said she wanted to spread understanding about the different positions each U.N. Security Council member has taken.

“If people understand what the argument is, then they should understand how to reach a solution,” she said.

Kinesiology senior Sam Rush attended the event on Thursday, along with around 15 other students.

“It gives students the opportunity to choose which side they like without having prior misconceptions or bias,” Rush said.

Cornell Students Travel to Capitol Hill

Seventeen Cornell students traveled to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress on September 19. They discussed Israel’s peace and security, pressing issues just prior to the scheduled UN discussion of a Palestinian Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Three Israeli exchange students joined this group of largely first time lobbyists. While some of the students were nervous to engage members of Congress on controversial issues such as Israel and the Middle East, the students quickly acclimated to and thrived in this setting. Freshman Lucy Goldberg, a new member of Cornell’s Israel Public Affairs Committee (CIPAC), wrote in her reflection of the trip, “I learned so much on this lobbying trip from CIPAC’s leadership, the AIPAC representative, my peers, and even the congressional staffers. I really feel like I now understand the true meaning of democracy because I could so easily walk into Congress and speak with somebody responsible for influencing U.S. policy towards an issue that I feel so passionately towards.”

During lunchtime, the group had the opportunity to take photos and meet with the office of Representative Maurice Hinchey [D-NY,22], whose district includes Ithaca. As the students returned to Ithaca Monday night, it was clear how much they had accomplished. They were able to experience a day on the Hill, voice their support for Israel to Congress, and bond with new and old CIPAC members. Many students even mentioned that they couldn’t wait for next year’s Congressional Engagement trip to D.C.!

ASU Group Uses P.A. Bid to Educate about Israel

From “ASU Group Uses P.A. Bid to Educate about Israel” (September 23, 2011)

For the past two weeks, Sun Devils for Israel (SDI), a pro-Israel student group at Arizona State University, has used the Palestinian Authority’s bid for a United Nations declaration of a Palestinian state to teach other students about Israel.

The group has set up a table on campus, where it tries to give people “a better sense of what Israel is like, how it’s a democracy, that it’s modern and that it’s an ally of America and American goals,” according to SDI member Beth Magerman.
